Getting Involved: For Students

YASP is a youth-led organization that actively utilizes students at the high school and college level. Student interns are often needed to aid the leadership team with workshops, special events, day-to-day responsibilities, and during open office hours.

High School Students

YASP is always looking for high school students who are willing to learn, work, and try new things that may be a bit out of their comfort zone. During their time with our organization, high school interns will:
> learn about Act 33 and the criminal justice system
> build leadership skills
> learn to speak up for themselves in different settings

Typical responsibilities of a high school intern include:
>actively engaging in public speaking (i.e. during workshops, rallies, other events)
> training to be organizers
>outreach work, such as finding places to conduct workshops and making calls on behalf of YASP
> training to lead workshops

HS interns will also be given plenty of room for personal input on their internship experience with YASP.

Interested?

High school students who are interested in an internship with YASP need to provide the following:
> A letter of interest that describes (1) how you heard about YASP; (2) what interests you about YASP; (3) why you would be a good fit at YASP; and (4) any other important information that you feel is relevant.

College Students

YASP actively seeks out highly-educated, highly-motivated college students that are ready to not only learn, but teach. The goal of the college student intern is to help young people and staff to better their knowledge of specific topics, for example computer skills or legal rights. During their time with our organization, college interns will:

>share their academic skills and interests with youth and staff members
>learn about Act 33 and the criminal justice system
>build leadership skills
>learn to speak up for themselves in different settings

Typical responsibilities of a college intern include:
>helping young people brought into the organization better their skill set
>creating and leading workshops
>mentoring young people on various topics depending on intern's area(s) of expertise
>training young people to build useful skill sets
>academic tutoring for staff and young people
>helping young people find jobs and resources
>assisting with resumes/cover letters/job interview practice
>attending and speaking at rallies and other special events
>setting up meetings with related organizations, legislators, and others

Students with backgrounds in law or education are most sought after, though students in all disciplines are encouraged to apply. YASP tries to match up student skills with what young people need.
